Brew Better at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide to Making Coffee Like a Pro

There’s something magical about that first sip of fresh-brewed coffee in the morning. Whether you're a casual sipper or a coffee aficionado, brewing a great cup at home doesn't have to be complicated. With the right tools, freshly roasted beans (like ours 👀), and a bit of guidance, you can take your at-home coffee game to the next level.

Below, we’ll walk you through how to brew your own coffee using four popular methods: Drip Machine, French Press, Pour Over, and Espresso Machine.


Drip Coffee Maker (Classic & Convenient)

Best for: Everyday drinkers who love simplicity.

Drip Coffee Maker

What You’ll Need:

  • Freshly ground coffee (medium grind)

  • Filter

  • Drip coffee machine

  • Filtered water

How to Brew:

  1. Place a filter in your machine’s basket.

  2. Use a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:15 (e.g., 1 gram of coffee for every 15 grams of water). For a standard 12-cup machine, use about 60-70g of coffee.

  3. Add filtered water to the reservoir.

  4. Press "start" and let it brew.

  5. Once finished, swirl the carafe gently to even out flavor, and enjoy!

💡 Pro tip: Keep your machine clean—old coffee oils can ruin a great roast.


French Press (Rich & Full-Bodied)

Best for: Those who love bold, strong coffee with more oils and texture.

Making Coffee With French Press

What You’ll Need:

  • French press (🔗Check out our Bodum Java French Press)

  • Freshly ground coffee (coarse)

  • Hot water (just off boil, ~200°F)

  • Stirring spoon

How to Brew:

  1. Use a 1:15 ratio again. For a standard 8-cup press, that’s about 54g of coffee to 800g (ml) of water.

  2. Add ground coffee to the press.

  3. Pour in half your water and let it "bloom" (release gases) for 30 seconds.

  4. Stir gently, then add the rest of the water.

  5. Place the lid on (don’t plunge yet), and let steep for 4 minutes.

  6. Press the plunger down slowly and evenly.

  7. Pour and serve immediately.

💡 Pro tip: Avoid letting coffee sit in the French press—it over-extracts and gets bitter.

Pour Over (Clean & Bright Flavor)

Best for: Coffee lovers who enjoy control and clean, nuanced flavors.

Making Coffee With Pour Over Coffee Maker

What You’ll Need:

  • Pour-over dripper (like a 🔗Hario V60 or 🔗Chemex Glass Pour-Over)

  • Paper filter

  • Freshly ground coffee (medium-fine for V60, medium-coarse for Chemex)

  • Gooseneck kettle (optional but ideal)

  • Scale & timer

How to Brew:

  1. Place your filter in the dripper and rinse with hot water (this removes paper taste and preheats).

  2. Add coffee—use about 25g of coffee for 400g of water.

  3. Start the timer and begin pouring about 50g of water in circles to bloom the coffee. Wait 30 seconds.

  4. Slowly continue pouring in stages, maintaining even saturation, until you reach 400g.

  5. The total brew time should be around 3–4 minutes.

  6. Remove the dripper, swirl your cup or carafe, and sip!

💡Pro tip: Pour-over brings out the unique flavor notes in our single-origin roasts.


Espresso Machine (Bold & Concentrated)

Best for: Espresso fans or home baristas ready to level up.

Making Espresso Shot

What You’ll Need:

  • Espresso machine

  • Freshly ground coffee (fine grind)

  • Tamper

  • Scale

  • Clean portafilter

How to Brew:

  1. Preheat your machine and portafilter.

  2. Add 18–20g of coffee to a double-shot basket.

  3. Tamp firmly and evenly.

  4. Insert portafilter and start the shot.

  5. Aim for a 25–30 second extraction, yielding about 36–40g of espresso.

  6. Sip solo or use it as the base for lattes, cappuccinos, or Americanos.

💡Pro tip: Dialing in espresso takes practice—adjust grind size and dose until it tastes balanced.
